Living in a Tiki World

The pacific islands region offers a rich history of arts and culture. From Hawaii to Micronesia and Polynesia, all of these islands have something fascinating to offer us. One of the famous symbols in Hawaii and the Polynesia is the Tiki. In the Central Eastern Pacific region of the Pacific Ocean, a Tiki is referred to carvings that take on humanoid forms. These carvings usually marks the territory of a particular tribe or serves as a marker for an ancient place. Considered as one of man’s oldest art form, carving has been practiced since ancient times. In fact there is a stone sculpture that is found out to be at least 25,000 years old. Tiki works of art varies in types, they could be made to be a sculpture, a totem pole, or a mask. But the basic structure, which is the humanlike ethnic face design, is inherent to each and every type of Tiki that is made. The popularity of the Tiki became more evident after World War 2 when soldiers from the south pacific took home souvenirs of pacific arts. This caught on rapidly as everybody dreamed of having a pacific island lifestyle, that which of being relaxed and laid back. It also became part of American culture especially after the musical “South Pacific” became a hit in the 50’s. This also evolved into the Tiki culture which flourished in the 60’s.

Today wooden Tiki Mask are popular home decors. They are also believed to ward off evil spirits and even as part of a fertility ritual. The basic Tiki mask designs are based on ancient Hawaiian gods. They are; Kane the god of sunlight and natural life, Ku the god of war, Lono the god of winds, rain, and fertility, and finally Kanaloa the god of the ocean.

Tiki masks are made from hardwood. Usually a high degree of craftsmanship and skills are required to do this sculpture. It is usually washed off with oil, wax or polish. Colors could be added to add vibrancy to an already powerful design. But the traditional finished is that of the old stained wood texture. Tiki sculptures could last a long time; just be sure that it is taken cared of properly.
